Introduction
Display the image pictured in the sidebar, Eight Cupcakes, to children. Encourage children to make up math sentences or stories about the picture. You might want to generate discussion by asking comparison questions such as, “How any cupcakes have chocolate frosting?”
Possible student responses
- There are eight cupcakes.
- The cupcakes are in two rows.
- There are four cupcakes with pink frosting.
- There are four cupcakes with chocolate frosting.
- There are four cupcakes with yellow cake and four cupcakes with chocolate cake.
- If I shared the cupcakes with a friend, each of us would get four cupcakes.
