Introduction
Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they do not know from a Headline Story. In this problem, they know that the number is greater than the number of fingers on 6 hands but less than the number of fingers on 8 hands.
Headline Story
Ann, Mike, and Joe wanted to show a number by holding up some fingers, but the number was too big. When Sally joined them, they were able to show the number.
Possible student responses
- The number must be larger than 30 but not larger than 40.
- If the number was 40, they each had to hold up 10 fingers.
