Grade K

Read the Headline Story to the class. Encourage children to compare a number of nickels with the value of the collection. You might want to provide nickels to demonstrate each response. Also have children discuss different ways to record their responses, such as writing number sentences, counting by fives, and making a table of nickels and values.

I have some nickels.

- If you had one nickel, you have 5 cents.
- If you have two nickels, you have 10 cents.
- You can trade two nickels for a dime.
- You can trade two nickels for 10 pennies.
- If you have three nickels, you cannot trade all of your nickels for one coin.
- You cannot make 11 cents with just nickels.
- We can make a table to show how much money a number of nickels makes.

Number of Nickels | Amount of Money |

1 | 5¢ |

2 | 10¢ |

3 | 15¢ |

4 | 20¢ |
