Introduction
Show children the image pictured in the sidebar, Building Blocks, and encourage them to use position words to discuss how the blocks are stacked. Have children make up stories and number sentences to describe the blocks.
Possible student responses
- There are four blocks on the bottom, three blocks in the next level up, two blocks on the third level, and one block on top.
- There are five cylinders and five bricks.
- You could write 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 or 5 + 5 = 10.
