Introduction
The goal of this Headline Story is not to discover a specific number, but to generate questions. If children seem confused by the abstract task of asking questions without expecting answers, you can think of a specific number and answer their questions.
Headline Story
I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10. What questions can you ask?
Possible student responses
- Is your number 4?
- Is your number even?
- Is your number more than 5?
- Is it less than 3?
- If I added 10 to your number what would I get?
- If I subtracted 1 from your number what would I get?
- Can you use a nickel to make that many cents?
- How much more do you need to make 10?
