The goal of a Headline Story is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Encourage children to invent good questions or problems to pose about the story below.
You might discuss what types of questions best help them narrow the possibilities. For example, asking “Do you have any dimes?” narrows the possible coins in the collection, but “Do you have four dimes?” can be answered by yes or no and may not provide any clues for the asking the next question.
