Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar or draw it on the board or chart paper. Tell children to write a mathematical sentence and tell a story about the picture.

- 5 – 2 = 3
- There were 5 telephone poles. Two of them fell down.
- 3 + 2 = 5
- Three telephone poles are vertical and two are horizontal, so that’s 5 poles in all.
