Introduction
Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they do not know from a Headline Story. In this problem, they do know that Kyra was standing on 5 on the number line. We do know how much she jumped the first time, but we do not know how much she jumped the second time. We do not know in which directions she jumped each time or where she landed.
Headline Story
Kyra was standing on 5 on the number line. She jumped one space. Then she jumped again.
Possible student responses
- After her first jump, she landed on 6 or 4.
- If she then jumped 2 spaces, she might be on 8, 6, 4, or 2.
- We do not know how big her second jump was.
- If her second jump was an odd number of spaces, she would land on an odd number.
