Share the Headline Story with the class. You may want to draw the diagram below on the board or on chart paper. If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, ask questions such as, “How many different figures are there is in the table?”, “What color are they?” or “What number sentences can you write about them?”

- There are 6 blocks in a sorting table.
- There are 3 different figures — squares, circles, and triangles.
- There are two colors — blue and green.
- There are 2 of each figure, so 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.
- There are 2 rows of 3 figures, so 3 + 3 = 6.
