Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to create questions that Lucy’s observation might suggest.
Headline Story
When one of Lucy’s friends was standing next to his desk, Lucy noticed that the desk seemed to be about half as tall as he was.
Possible student responses
- If Lucy’s friend is about 4
feet tall, then the desk is about 2 feet 3 inches high. - Lucy’s own desk is probably about half Lucy’s height, though it could be higher or lower.
- If Lucy’s friend is in 4th grade, what height might we expect him to be?
- What other heights might be reasonable to estimate in relation to our own heights?
- Can we judge the height of the classroom ceiling by estimating how many times our height it might be?
