Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar and read it aloud to the class. If children need help getting started, ask questions such as “How many pencils could Amelia buy with 25¢?”, “How many stickers could Amelia buy with 25¢?”, or “What is she bought some pencils and some stickers?”
Headline Story
Stickers cost 2¢ and pencils cost 5¢. Amelia has 25¢.
Possible student responses
- She could buy five pencils for 25¢, so 5¢ + 5¢ + 5¢ + 5¢ + 5¢ = 25¢.
- She could buy 12 stickers for 24¢, which would leave her with one penny.
- She could buy five stickers and three pencils, so 2¢ + 2¢ + 2¢ + 2¢ + 2¢ + 5¢ + 5¢ + 5¢ = 25¢.
- If she buys two pencils and does not buy any stickers, she would have 15¢ left over.
- Stickers cost 3¢ less than pencils.
- She might have two dimes and a nickel, or she might have 25 pennies, or she might have five nickels, or she might have a dime and three nickels. (If children mention a quarter, you might show them one and introduce it.)
