Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar and read it aloud to the class. Encourage the class to discuss the story and to fill in the blanks. Children may find it helpful to draw a picture of Eliza’s route from her home to the library.
Headline Story
Eliza lives 12 blocks from the library. To get to the library, she walks _____ blocks, turns right, walks _____ blocks, turns right again, walks one block, and then crosses the street.
Possible student responses
- Eliza might walk five blocks before turning right the first time, which would mean she walks six blocks before making the next right turn; 5 + 6 + 1 = 12.
- Eliza might walk two blocks, turn right, walk nine more blocks, turn right and then walk one final block; 2 + 9 + 1 = 12.
- To get home from the library, Eliza would cross the street, walk one block, turn left, walk some blocks, turn left again, and then walk some more blocks to her house.
