Introduction
Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they do not know about a Headline Story. In this problem, they do know that Dave has twice as many pennies as Mike, and that Pam has three more pennies than Dave. They do not know how many pennies Mike has. It might be helpful to make a table to list some of the situations.
Headline Story
Dave has twice as many pennies as Mike. Pam has three more pennies than Dave.
Possible student responses
- Pam has the most pennies, then Dave, and then Mike.
- If Mike has 5 pennies, Dave has 10, and Pam has 13.
- If Mike has 100 pennies, Dave has 200, and Pam has 203.
- Dave always has an even number of pennies and Pam always has an odd number.
- The number of pennies Mike has could be either even or odd.
