Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage children to think of creative ways to complete the story. Tell children, if they choose to list all possible ages, to make sure they list them in order. It might be helpful to make a table of their possible ages.
Headline Story
Nick is one year younger than Mike and one year older than Jake. The sum of their ages is less than 20.
Possible student responses
- If Nick is 5, then Mike is 6 and Jake is 4.
- The sum of their ages is 15.
- Mike must be at least 2 (that is, if Jake was just born).
- None of the kids is older than 7.
- We can make a rule machine. The input could be Nick’s age, and the output—the sum of the ages of the three boys.
