Introduction
Read the Headline Story aloud to children and encourage them to come up with a variety of responses. If children have used a floor number line to make jumps, remind them of their experience. If children state that they landed on a number less than the starting number, ask which direction they jumped on the number line.

Possible student responses
- If you started on 5 and jumped forward, you would have landed on 6.
- If you make a forward jump from 10, you would land on 11.
- If you jump forward, your landing number is one bigger than the starting number.
