Headline Story
Herman was in the grocery store and wanted to find out if he had enough money to buy 9 packs of gum prices at $1.19 each.
Possible student responses
- He could multiply 9 × $2 to make sure that he has enough money.
- He might multiply $1.19 × 10 to figure out that he probably needs more than $10 to buy 9 packs.
- He might find the sum of 9 × $1 and 9 × 20¢ to determine that 9 packs cost a little less than $10.80.
- He could divide the amount of money he has by 9 to see if the result is more than $1.19.
- If he has $18, he could reason that he has enough money because he could buy 9 packs of gum that cost $2 each with that amount of money.
