Introduction
Read the following story to your students or write it on the board. If your students have difficulty getting started, you might suggest that they first work the problem with some numbers.
Headline Story
Geoff counted his money and asked the price of three different items. He then knew how much more money he would have to earn before he could buy them all. How did he find out?
Possible student responses
- Once he knew the three costs, he would have to add them together. Then he could figure out the difference between that amount and the amount of money he had. The difference is the amount of money he had to earn.
