Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of creative stories to illustrate the number sentence.
Headline Story
Complete the number sentence and make a story to go with it: 42 ÷ _____ = 6.
Possible student responses
Sample response: 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
Possible stories:
- Dan had 42 erasers that he shared equally among 7 friends, so each friend received 6 erasers.
- I bought 6 pencils for 42¢, so each one cost 7¢.
- Melissa spent 42 minutes planting 6 flowers, so she spent 7 minutes planting each flower.
