Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to create problems that can be solved using the information from the story.
Headline Story
Chip chooses an odd number and Remy chooses an even number. Sarah adds the numbers. Explain what type of number the sum will be.
Possible student responses
- The sum must be odd.
- If I have an even number of things, I can arrange them into pairs.
- If I try to pair an odd number of things, I will have one left over.
- Adding an even number and an odd number combines all the pairs and I still have one left over, so the sum must be odd.
