Grade 4

Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to reason logically about the size of the groups.

Charlie put all his nickels in groups of _____. He had 3 left over that didn’t make a whole group. What can we say about the size of his groups?

- Charlie must have groups of at least 4 nickels because if the groups had 1 or 3 in each, then the leftovers could form another group.
- If the groups have 2 in each, then there would be only 1 left over.
- If Charlie has 3 groups of 4 nickels, then he has 15 nickels in all.
- The total number of nickels is 3 more than the number of groups times the number in each group.
