Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think about what can be concluded from the information in the story.
Headline Story
Arthur has two coin banks. One bank has only pennies and quarters. The other bank has only nickels, dimes, and quarters. Arthur took 10 coins from one of the banks and got exactly 80¢.
Possible student responses
- Arthur could not have gotten 80¢ from the bank with pennies and quarters.
- He could not have only quarters, dimes, or nickels, because 10 coins would be too much or too little money.
- He could not have only quarters and nickels or only quarters and dimes.
- He could have 6 dimes and 4 nickels or 1 quarter, 2 dimes, and 7 nickels.
