Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to make a table to list all the possible numbers of intersections.
Headline Story
There are 10 streets in our small town. Some streets run from north to south. The rest of the streets run from east to west.
Possible student responses
- More than 1 street runs north to south.
- If 2 streets run north to south, then 8 streets run east to west.
- There could be 9, 16, 21, 24, or 26 intersections.
- You can make a table to list all the possible numbers of intersections:
