Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class and encourage children to think of creative ways to complete it. If children need help getting started, review the facts they do know and the facts they do not know from the story. They do know how many pencils Dai and Ken have. They do not know how many pencils Janet has.
Headline Story
Janet has more pencils than Dai, but fewer pencils than Ken. Dai has three pencils and Ken has eight.
Possible student responses
- Janet has more than 3 and fewer than 8, so she could have 4, 5, 6, or 7 pencils.
- Ken has 5 more pencils then Dai.
