Introduction
Show children a collection of objects that can be sorted. You might use the simple figures pictured in the sidebar, Squares, Circles, and Triangles, or you might use other objects, such as attribute links or coins. Encourage children to tell a story about what they see.
Possible student responses
- There are circles and triangles.
- I see 4 blue circles.
- I see 3 purple triangles.
- There are no red shapes.
- There are 7 shapes in all.
- There are more circles than triangles.
- There are more blue shapes than purple shapes.
- If you put all the circles in a group and all the triangles in a group, the circles group would be bigger.
