Introduction
Display the image in the sidebar, Nickel, to the class. Tell children that the picture looks like one side of a nickel. You may want to show an actual nickel as well. Then encourage children to make up sentences or stories about the nickel.
Possible student responses
- The nickel is gray and round.
- The nickel is bigger than a penny and is worth more than a penny.
- I can buy something that costs 5 cents with a nickel.
- If someone wants to give you a nickel or a penny, take the nickel because it is worth more.
- I bought a piece of gum with a nickel.
