Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the class. Then, encourage discussion. While subtraction number sentences have not been formally introduced yet, they could appear among children’s responses, and it is up to you to use this possibility to introduce “–” informally.

Ten counters are on the desk. Niam covered some, and Sunny sees only six.
Possible student responses
- Niam covered four counters.
- We can describe the story with the number sentences like: 6 + ___ = 10, 10 – 4 = 6. (There are more sentences that would describe the story, but children don’t need to list them all.)
- Sunny sees more counters than Niam has covered.
