Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar and read it aloud to the class. Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they do not know from a Headline Story. In this problem, they do know that there are 10 children in a classroom and that some are sitting and some are standing. They do not know how many children are sitting and how many are standing.
Headline Story
There are 10 children in a classroom. Some are sitting. Some are standing.
Possible student responses
- Maybe 2 children are standing and 8 are sitting.
- Maybe 5 children are sitting and 5 are standing.
- I think 6 children are sitting and 4 kids are standing.
- I think at least one child is standing and at least one is sitting.
- Are more children sitting or standing?
