Introduction
Have children think of a story to match the following number sentence. The sample responses are deliberately broader than what a class is likely to produce in any session. You might give one of the responses below as an example. Encourage children to be creative with their own responses.

- 10 – 2 = 8
- I had 10 ¢ and a hole in my pocket. When I got home I only had 8¢ left, so I lost 2¢ on the way.
- Joe’s book is 10 inches long. My book is 8 inches long, so it is 2 inches shorter.
- Nan went up to the tenth stair and came back down to the eighth stair. How many stairs did she climb down?
