Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar, Stars, and encourage children to discuss what they see. If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, ask questions such as, “How many stars are there in all?” or “What part of the whole collection is each color?”
Possible student responses
- There are two columns of green stars and two columns of blue stars.
- Half of the stars are green and half of the stars are blue.
- There are 20 stars. There are 10 green stars and 10 blue stars.
- Each row has four stars. Each column has five stars.
