Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar, Looking Closely 1, to the class. Ask, “What do you see?” or “What information do we have?” The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically.
Possible student responses
- There are more birds than bunnies.
- On one branch there are four birds.
- On a different branch there are six birds.
- None of the birds are flying.
- There are three flowers and two trees in the picture, which makes five plants.
