Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar to children and read it aloud. If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, pose questions such as, “How can Janna and her friends share the sandwich?” or “What if only three children wanted to share the sandwich? How could you cut it?”
Headline Story
For Janna’s birthday, she and three of her friends went to the zoo. Janna’s mom made one sandwich to bring to the zoo in case Janna and her friends got hungry.
Possible student responses
- If only Janna gets hungry, she can have the whole sandwich.
- If two of the kids get hungry, they will each have half of the sandwich.
- Janna’s mom might cut the sandwich diagonally or down the middle to make halves.
- If three of the kids get hungry, the sandwich will have to be cut into three pieces.
- Janna’s mom could cut the sandwich into strips to try to make each piece about the same size.
- If all of the kids get hungry, Janna’s mom should cut the sandwich into four pieces.
