Jin has balancing scales and weights of 1, 2, 4, and 8 ounces.
Possible student responses
Jin can weigh objects weighing any whole number of ounces up to 15. We can make a table to show the next weights she’d need, to weigh heavier objects, would be 16 ounces, or 1 pound. With this and the smaller weights, she’d be able to weigh anything up to 1 pound 15 ounces. We can make a table to show which weights she could use to measure each number of ounces. She does not need the 1-ounce weight to weigh any object weighing an even number of ounces.
