Introduction
Children may respond to the Headline Story at various ability levels. Some children will simply respond to the first sentence. Some children will go much farther in their calculations. Encourage each child to say something about the story.
Headline Story
I have 10 markers. Half of them are blue. Half of Jim’s markers are also blue. Jim has 4 blue markers.
Possible student responses
- I have 5 blue markers.
- I have more blue markers than Jim.
- Jim has 8 markers.
- Together, we have 18 markers, and 9 of them are blue.
- We cannot tell the colors of the other markers.
- I have two more markers than Jim.
- These are some number sentences that go with the story: 5 + 5 = 10; 5 – 4 = 1; 5 + 4 = 9; 10 + 8 = 18.
