Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to use logical reasoning to draw conclusions about the length of the fence and the area of the garden.
Headline Story
A fence that is 24 feet long surrounds a garden.
Possible student responses
- If the garden is a square, it would measure 6 feet on each side, so its area would be 36 square feet.
- The garden might be an 8-by-4 rectangle with an area of 32 square feet.
- It could be a 10-by-2 rectangle, in which case the area would be 20 square feet.
- The garden doesn’t have to have straight sides; it could be a circle!
