Introduction
Headline Stories are purposefully open-ended enough to encourage children to explore various ways to answer. For this Headline Story, you may want to ask questions such as, “What can you say about the boat?” or “How many trips will it take?” Encourage children to think logically and creatively to make up stories.
Headline Story
Four friends are trying to cross a river. All they have is one boat, and it can only fit 2 people.
Possible student responses
- Two of the friends can go across the river first.
- Then one of them will need to go back to pick up another person.
- Again, one person will need to go back to pick up the last person.
- Counting trips both directions, it will take 5 trips to get everyone across.
