Introduction
Headline Stories are deliberately broad in order to allow children to respond at varying levels. For this Headline Story, you may want to ask questions such as, “How can everyone get across the river?” or “How many trips will it take?”
Headline Story
Some friends are trying to cross a river. All they have is one boat, and it can hold 3 people at once.
Possible student responses
- Since we don’t know how many friends there are, we don’t know how many trips it will take.
- If there are 10 friends, 3 friends cross the river. Two stay and one goes back for more. He brings two more and goes back for more. He brings two more, and everyone gets out of the boat.
- For 10 friends, it would take 7 trips.
