Introduction
Read the Headline Story to your students. You may wish to give students five or six rods of each color to help them organize their ideas. Students do not need to complete a prism to solve this problem.
Headline Story
Ian used Cuisenaire Rods, to make several rectangular prisms. The volume of each prism was 100 cubic centimeters, but no two prisms had the same dimensions.
Possible student responses
- One prism could be 10 cm by 10 cm by 1 cm like the “flat” block in a set of base-ten blocks.
- Ian could build a long, skinny prism with 10 orange rods laid end to end.
- Any prism he can build with 10 orange rods will work, such as two layers of 5 rods each (10 cm by 2 cm by 5 cm).
