Introduction
Share the Headline Story with your students. Point out that most river lengths cannot be given precisely. Students might compare the lengths of the rivers by subtracting, doubling, or thinking about half.
Headline Story
The Nile River in Africa is more than 4,100 miles long. The Amazon River in South America and the Yangtze River in Asia are both about 3,950 miles long. The Missouri River is the longest river in North America. It is about 2,550 miles long. The Rio Grande River is about 1,900 miles long.
Possible student responses
- The Nile, Amazon, and Yangtze Rivers are about twice the length of the Rio Grande River.
- The Nile is between 100 and 200 miles longer than the Amazon and Yangtze Rivers.
