Introduction

Read the Headline Story to your students. Encourage them to think about what can be concluded from information in the story and about questions that cannot be answered without additional data.

Headline Story

An African elephant weighs about 5 $\frac{1}{2}$ tons. In the wild, an elephant can eat as much as 650 pounds of grass and leaves in one day. Zoo elephants eat about 150 pounds of different nutritious foods (hay, vegetables, and fruits) each day.

Possible student responses

Five and a half tons is 11,000 pounds.
If a wild elephant ate 500 pounds of food every day, it would eat its own body weight in 22 days.
In a week, zoo elephants eat much more than half a ton of food. But they eat more than four times as much in the wild as they eat in zoos. Is that because the food in zoos is more nutritious, or because they get less exercise in zoos?
