Headline Story
An African elephant can drink 15,000 gallons of water in a year. A large kiddie swimming pool can hold about 200 gallons of water.
Possible student responses
During a year, the elephant drinks an amount equal to 75 kiddie pools full of water. That is more than one kiddie pool a week. It is about the same amount as one and a half kiddie pools a week, so the elephant would take less than 5 days to drink the amount in a kiddie pool. That’s about 300 gallons a week, or about 40 gallons a day.
I drink about 4 to 5 cups of liquid a day: 3 glasses of milk, some juice, and maybe some more. That’s about 40 fl oz.
Two hundred kids like me would drink about 8,000 fl oz each day.
