Introduction
Display the image pictured in the sidebar, Pattern Block Design, to children. If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, pose questions such as, “What colors are the blocks?”, “How many are there of each color?” or “How are the blocks arranged?”
Possible student responses
- I see a pattern block design.
- The design uses yellow blocks, red blocks, and green blocks.
- There are three green blocks in the design.
- There are more red blocks in the design than yellow blocks, but more of the design is yellow because blocks are bigger.
- There is a green block on top of every yellow block.
- I see three yellow blocks and four red blocks.
- I could make this design without using yellow blocks.
