Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to write mathematical sentences about the situation. Have them explain their answers.
Headline Story
Rosa and Elliot walked around the track at the high school. Rosa walked 2 more laps than Elliot.
Possible student responses
- If Elliot walked 10 laps, then Rosa walked 12 laps.
- 10 + 2 = 12.
- Rosa walked 5 laps, and Elliot walked 2 fewer laps. So, Elliot walked 3 laps.
- R – E = 2.
- If I count the number of laps Rosa walked and then take away the number of laps Elliot walked, I will always get a difference of 2.
- 5 – 3 = 2
