Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. To help children get started, you might pose additional questions such as, “If you take three coins out, how much could the coins be worth?” or “How can you find the total value of the coins?”
Headline Story
I have dimes and pennies in a jar.
Possible student responses
- If you take 3 coins out, it could be 3¢, 12¢, 21¢, or 30¢.
- If you count all the coins you can make piles of 10 dimes to count dollars.
- When all the dimes are counted, you can count on by ones to add the pennies.
- If I have 62¢, I could have 62 pennies, 52 pennies and a dime, or even 6 dimes and 2 pennies.
