Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is to translate situations and information into problems that can be solved mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Encourage children to invent good questions or conclusions.
Headline Story
I had some dimes. Then, I spent 30 cents.
Possible student responses
- I have 3 fewer dimes now.
- If I had 10 dimes to begin with, that is a dollar, so now I have 70¢.
- If I started with 30¢, so I have no money left.
- I have 20¢ left, so I must have started with 50¢.
