Grade 1

Share the Headline Story with the class. Pose questions, such as, “How many blocks could Imara have?” or “Could she have more than 100 blocks?” if children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses.

Imara had a lot of blocks. She made one tower with 3 blocks and used all the rest of the blocks to make towers of 10 blocks.

- Imara could have 43 blocks—4 towers of 10 and one tower of 3.
- She might have 93 blocks —9 towers of 10 and one tower of 3.
- However many blocks she has, the ones digit of the number of blocks is 3.
- She could have more than 100 blocks if she has 10 or more towers of 10 blocks.
